In the 1940s and 50s, Breton primarily worked on essays and poems, including Arcane 17 (1945), mythological prose set in Canada. He also published Constellations (1959), a suite of poems inspired by Joan Miró's gouache paintings of the same name Founder of the review Littérature in 1919 (with André Breton and Louis Aragon), he was active in French Dada and a central figure of Surrealism in its early years, though eventually drifted away from the movement. His principal collections of poetry were published in a single volume by Grasset in 1973. The idea is expressed in two principal forms in Breton’s love poetry.

Andre Breton was born at Tinchebray (Orne) in 1896. Initially he began training in medicine. However, he soon realised that it would be poetry which would be his true vocation. His early influences tended towards the path of symbolism however with his call up for the first world war there was a change in outlook and influence on the young breton.

He also mentored young surrealist writers and artists. Andre Breton died in Paris September 28th 1966. During his lifetime, Breton produced a tremendous body of work that contained poetry, novels, criticism, and theory.
